This called an "Emotional Place". It was an artist's exhibit at Eastern State Penitentiary. It was a famous prison from the 1800s to the 1970s. The room has small speakers that played songs from men and women once held at Eastern State. It has a strong contrast and shows a feeling of sadness. It's sad since the outside world is right there but you can't get out. This photo is successful because of the rust and chipping paint, they help give it a sadder feel. The small slant of sunlight was supposed to help the prisoners get vitamin d but ended up making them sadder and more desperate to get out.
This is part of "Symmetrical". It has very strong symmetry with the two trees and the door. But the edges differ making it a little more interesting then an exact copy. It was successful because I kept the rule of thirds in mind. You can see the lines line up to the trees and the bottom line almost lines up with the wall. This was taken in my highschool's courtyard. There are a lot of small trees and bushes that contrast really well with the building's red bricks. This photo wasn't originally one of my favorites but looking at it later, it definatley is.
This photo is called "Portrait" We got time to play with studio lights and the different shadows in photos. The subject is my very very good friend Ashley. She is the subject in a lot of my photos. I'm in a lot of hers too. Part of what makes it a good, sucessful photo here is that there's a really nice contrast between the color of Ashley's skin and how harsh and dark the shadows are. You can see the same kinda of shadows on the green background just not as well. The other part of what makes it so sucessful is how color neutral everything else is. The background is a solid green, her shirt is black, etc. It leads the eye directly to her instead.
This photo is called "Forced Perspective" It is a part of a series where we had to use props and people to make something seem larger or smaller. This is shown with Ashley 'rock climbing' on the back of a chair. When in reality Ashley is not 5 inches tall and is taller than the chair by a good 2 feet. This photo was sucessful because we took it about 20 times before we finally got the right angle and the right distance between Ashley and the Chair. If you know to look for it you can kind of see exactly how far back Ashley really is. There is a whole hallway between the chair and herself.
This photo may look a little boring but it's called "Monochromatic" for a reason. This was another project of mine where we had to finad 20-25 photos of mostly one color. I chose yellow because it i my favorite color. I was kind of surprised while doing this at how many yellow things there were in my school but also at how many different shades there were. This photo has a storng asymmetrical feel to it. The yellow is divided perfectly in half by the blocky red words. Part of what made this so sucessful was that I got really close and put one the yellow reallyin frame so it didn't distract from the main color. I hd to keep some of the blue and brown in frame because otherwise it looked like just red words on a yellow background. It wasn't as defined.
